YOU SAY PARTY - You Say Party - Paper Bag
In 2004, You Say Party played their first punk show in a church basement outside Vancouver, BC. Four years later, they were touring China and Japan on the strength of two acclaimed albums, 2005's ''Hit the Floor!'' and 2007's ''Lose All Time.'' They shifted from new wave-punk into pop rock and were poised for breakout, mainstream success with 2009's award-winning ''XXXX'' when tragedy struck. Drummer Devon Clifford collapsed on stage and died suddenly. You Say Party went on indefinite hiatus in 2011, but the core four (Becky Ninkovic, Stephen O'Shea, Krista Loewen, and Derek Adam) reunited in 2012 and have spent the last four years slow dancing towards this moment: Their first fell-length release in six years.

JAMES SUPERCAVE - Better Strange - Fairfax Recordings
In 2015, Fairfax Recordings band, James Supercave, made waves combining Sophie Koko Gate's award winning animation video 'Half Wet' with their single of the same name, "Better Strange." The video, which premiered via Nerdist, is basically "like 90s cartoons did the same drugs that our music is hooked on. Beautiful, bizarre, hilarious;" states the band.

    UPCOMING RELEASES

LAKE STREET DIVE - Side Pony

LAKE STREET DIVE - Side PonyLAKE STREET DIVE - Side Pony - NonesuchLAKE STREET DIVE - Side Pony
Lake Street Dive's Nonesuch Records debut album, Side Pony, will be released on February 19, 2016. The four band members—drummer Michael Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney, singer Rachael Price, and guitarist/trumpeter Michael "McDuck" Olson—worked with Nashville-based producer Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Secret Sisters) on the record. Tour dates to support Side Pony begin February 22 in Phoenix and include stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, New York, and more. Side Pony takes its name from a song on the record that refers to a whimsical hairstyle, but it also serves as a metaphor for Lake Street Dive's philosophy and personality as a band. As Kearney puts it, "When we were settling on the album title, that one just stuck out to us as embodying the band's spirit. We've always been this somewhat uncategorizable, weird, outlying, genre-less band. That's the statement we wanted to make with this record: be yourself."

DR. DOG - The Psychedelic Swamp

DR. DOG - The Psychedelic SwampMAVIS STAPLES - Livin' On A High Note - AntiDR. DOG - The Psychedelic Swamp
Mavis Staples has been a soul and gospel music legend for more than 50 years. Her work fronting the legendary Staples Singers defined the sound of politically-committed soul and influenced generations of musicians. As a solo artist in her own right she has helped to define much of what is righteous and soulful in American music. With Livin' On A High Note, Mavis Staples has delivered the most joyful and uplifting record of her career. 12 original songs written exclusively for Mavis by some of the finest songwriters of our time including M .Ward, Ben Harper, Valerie June, Neko Case, tune-yards, Nick Cave, John Baptiste, Justin Vernon, Aloe Blacc, and more. At age 76, Mavis Staples shows no signs of slowing down and 2016 is slated to be one of her best years yet. On February 20th, HBO will debut Mavis! – the first feature length documentary on the gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon.

    Greetings, Monster people!

It's time for a little moralizing.  Despite the growth of vinyl and the upswing of positive news for record stores in recent years, we still hear plenty of talk in the media & on blogs about that's great and all, and how quaint, but really streaming is going to take over everything, people still don't buy CDs, and vinyl's just a fad.

Well, maybe.  But opinions and observations aren't necessarily facts, and they certainly aren't any guarantee of what the future holds.  And it just so happens we have a lot of opinions of our own, and we aren't afraid to share them.

It's very clear that the prevalence of digital downloads had a direct backlash - people who wanted better sound quality, giving way to the resurgence of vinyl.  A few cool cats (or whoever) realized that vinyl was a superior experience to mp3s, not only sonically, but socially, and spread the word.  One thing led to another, and here we are (read Malcolm Gladwell's "Tipping Point" to see better how these things work).  Vinyl sales will exceed 10 million this year, if they haven't already.

But wait, there's more.  What you possibly haven't picked up on is that a lot of people into vinyl, having invested in nicer sound systems, are picking up their old CDs and playing them and discovering - you know what? - these CDs a lot of times really sound good!  There's plenty of variation from disc to disc, just like there is with vinyl.  But if you've got a really nice sound system, a really well recorded and mastered CD can sound AWESOME. ....more
