What's "Miller's Crossing" about? During an interview segment includedin the disc's extras, John Turturro stumbles on the question before findingan explanation that's suitably profound: "It's about a person who losestheir soul," he says, and improvises on this theme until his intervieweris either satisfied or asleep. As far as descriptions of the Coen Brothers classicgo, that's about as good as any, even if Turturro pulled it out of his butt.To say that "Miller's Crossing" transcends its roots in prohibition-era gangsterpictures and post-war film noir would be tautology. After all, this is the Coensthat we're talking aboutthey could turn a '60s beach bunny movie into Proust.Unfortunately, extras are light: a featurette focusing on Barry Sonnenfeld'sgenius cinematography is the highlight, but the interview segments with starsGabriel Byrne, Marcia Gay Harden, and Turturro are merely filler. Still, thislong-awaited disc is not to be missed.back to top
