Few realize the tremendous debt that "Three's Company" owes to William Shakespeare. After all, just about every episode overuses and abuses one of the Bard's mostfamous plot conventions-the Overheard Conversation. This tenet is present inmuch of Big Willie's work, including "O," a remake of Othello set in anAmerican high school, the perfect place for a modern tragedy. After all, who knowsmore about Machiavellian backstabbing and vindictive gossip than teenagers? And what a bunch of teenagers they are: Mekhi Phifer as the title character andJosh Hartnett as his nemesis, Hugo, bring contemporary heat to this update, whichshould serve as a nice primer for people wary of Olde English. Sadly, the Columbine"incident" led to the shelving of this film for a few years, a periodof time in which leading lady Julia Stiles made other Shakespeare movies and kissedother black guys. So if "O" feels like a bit of a retread, blame MarilynManson.
