Reviews:

''Nellyville'' is the second studio album by American rapper Nelly, released on June 25, 2002. - Wikipedia

It says something that the best song hands down on the second album from St. Louissuperstar Nelly is about sneakers. Just sneakers. On "Air Force Ones,"Nelly and his St. Lunatics appear to be having genuine fun, swapping tales ofcustomized kicks the way old white men talk about fishing exploits. Most importantly,it's a topic not dependent on fame or wealth. Sneakers are always a pointof pride. These guys can just afford more and better ones now.

Listening to Nellyville, though, it feels as if a varied footwear collectionmay well be the only upside to the celeb life. Clearly, selling oodles of recordshas been good for the wardrobe, but it's also left Nelly's psyche cloudedin darkness. On the otherwise shoptastic "Splurge," Nelly let it fly:"They scream 'war'/ I'm like f*** it/ go buy a battleship/and bring it up the Mississippi/ if you really wanna come and get me." Andon "Say Now," he laments, "I could count how many times somebodyasked me what's wrong/ why my mother was gone/ why my daddy wasn't home."

Sure, there are plenty of tales of the good life here. On the title track, heargues in favor of "40 acres and a pool!" But perhaps Nelly's ennuiis best captured in this sentiment from "Kings Highway," a song thatfinds him at the intersection of glamour and overexposure. "Swerving in thisBentley and ain't got no place to go," he purrs. No place but down, that is.
