It's rare enough when a pop artist is just getting started on its eighth album, much less a country juggernaut with over 25 million copies sold. But Brooks & Dunn approach Red Dirt Road like they've got something to prove, and they pretty much do. The s***-kicking roots rock and Tex-Mex and R&B influences that have always been present in their music are at its center here, from the Rolling Stones riff that kicks off "You Can't Take the Honky Tonk Out of the Girl" to the blues horns of "Believer" to the full-on church revivalism of "I Used to Know This Song by Heart" (and no, they're not referring to "These Dreams"). They even throw a frightening gospel rave-up called "Holy War" on as an uncredited bonus track, in which they actually seem to criticize the U.S.'s recent goings-on (we'll call them) in Iraq et al. Catchy and ambitious-a potent combo.
