The solo project/alter ego of Isaac Brock, mastermind of the widely acclaimed Modest Mouse. "Ugly Casanova" is based on Edgar Graham, a man who approached Modest Mouse at a show, displaying a gentle mental instability that endeared him to the band. He shared some of his songs and writing with the group, who persuaded him to commit to work to tape, then he disappeared. It's hoped Mr. Casanova reappears with the release of this album.

Reviews:

Typically, Isaac Brock, songwriter and leader of moody Seattle trio Modest Mouse,is assuring interviewers that his new semi-solo album-recorded as UglyCasanova-does not signal the breakup of his main gig. Of course it doesn't;he needs his trusty rhythm section (who on an average night are nearly the onlything keeping the band from falling apart completely onstage, particularly superdrummerJeremiah Green) as much as they need him. But Sharpen Your Teeth doesfind him and co-producer Brian Deck taking Brock's usual Mousiness intointeresting new territory; this is a weird groove record, bass-heavier thanusual and not devoid of songs, either. Sure, songs like the meandering "Barnacles"are self-indulgent-this is a solo project for a reason. But on "SpilledMilk Factory" he fits himself into Tom Waits territory with the assuranceof a self-styled weirdo-the one he's always been, even when he signedwith Epic.
