Kurt Elling's unique mix of scat, vocal pyrotechnics and poetry resulted in a Blue Note debut that earned the young Chicagoan a Grammy nomination. On the Messenger, he has his way with some jazz chestnuts ("April in Paris," "Prelude to a Kiss"), as well as his own compositions (a small suite of 3 romantic originals by Elling and his gifted pianist Laurence Hobgood). Another highlight is Elling's performance of the Zombies' "Time of the Season" with singer Cassandra Wilson. Servicing to jazz and college radio.
