The Reader opens in post-WWII Germany when teenager Michael Berg becomes ill and is helped home by Hanna, a stranger twice his age. Michael recovers from scarlet fever and seeks out Hanna to thank her. The two are quickly drawn into a passionate, but secretive affair.
Reviews:
So you’re an adolescent boy who’s asked to read aloud to Kate Winslet after numerous clandestine sex sessions. Excellent! Only the next time you see her, eight years later, it turns out that Kate was a she-wolf of the S.S. Bogus! Such is the dilemma faced by the protagonist of The Reader, and you’ve got to admit—it’s an original one. Stephen Daldry’s indie sleeper (adapted from the book of the same name) was a surprise Oscar underdog.
